Enlarged Prostate

Understanding and Treating BPH

If you're experiencing urinary issues, you might be dealing with an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This is a common part of male aging, affecting over half of men over the age of 80. While the exact cause remains unclear, it's believed that changes in male sex hormones as you age could be a contributing factor. Additionally, a family history of prostate issues or testicular abnormalities may increase your risk. Interestingly, men who had their testicles removed at a young age do not develop BPH, highlighting the role of hormones in this condition.

The prostate is a vital gland that produces fluid to carry sperm during ejaculation. Located around the urethra—the tube responsible for passing urine out of the body—the prostate's growth can affect urination and bladder function as men age. As the prostate enlarges, it can press against the urethra, leading to the symptoms commonly associated with BPH.

Signs and Symptoms of BPH

Recognizing the symptoms of BPH early can help in managing the condition effectively. Common signs include:

  • Dribbling at the end of urination
  • Difficulty starting urination or straining to urinate
  • A weak urine stream
  • Inability to completely empty the bladder
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Needing to urinate multiple times at night
  • Painful urination or blood in the urine (may indicate infection)
  • Strong and sudden urges to urinate

What Causes BPH?

Several factors can contribute to the development of BPH, including:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Chronic medical conditions, especially liver or kidney disease
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Infections
  • Certain medications (such as narcotics or chemotherapy)
